Just popped in for a quick rant
If one more person comes on the radio or tv and praises actress Charlize Theron for her bravery in “uglifying” herself for the role of Aileen Wuornos in Monster* I will throw something heavy at the lazy presenter / commentator / journalist / pundit.
I’m sure she does a fine acting job but to laud her for sitting in a chair while a team of hair and make up artists hide some of her (Hollywood definition of) beauty so that she can better imagine herself in the role of a homeless prostitute is not bravery.
/rant
There, I feel much better now.
*what is it with Hollywood? This is the third film in as many years with Monsters in the title (Monsters Inc, Monster’s Ball and now Monster). God forbid that there should be a dearth of creative titling in Hollywood, eh?

In my opinion, she didn’t really need much uglifying done to her anyway.
(No, I’m not jealous. Not at all.)

I couldn’t believe Nelson Mandela praised her by saying she has “put South Africa on the map”. Talk about selling yourself short!

I think it’s unfortunate that people are focusing on how she looked, when really it’s that she became the character. I think she deserves the oscar more than anyone in the history of the award because there wasn’t a trace of who I thought she really is in that character.
This film was also a passion project for her and she produced it as well. I feel that it cheapens it when people focus on the fact that she had to (*gasp*) gain 30 lbs (oh horror!) to play the role.
That said, I never, ever, ever want to watch that movie again. It was far too traumatic.

Nelson who…?
(joking)

If I’d had more time I would have said a bit more, I’ve nothing against Charlize Theron, I’m sure she made a fine Oscar-deserving performance (thanks for letting us know about the film Kimberley, I don’t think it has opened here yet). The rant was more about Hollywood and the press and I should’ve made that clear.
*and breathe*

Also note that Monster’s Ball starred Halle Barry in a “natural” form (like Thereon) and she also one the award for Best Actress.
Renee Z. was robbed for “blimping up” for Bridget Jones.

That was Halle Berry in natural form? Sheesh. There’s no hope for us mere mortals!

Renee Zellweger really sold out when she went back to being a lollipop, didn’t she? “hello girls, anorexia’s sooo fashionable!”

Why no Scottish or Welsh accents?
I’ve just come across “Collect Britain”, where the British library has launched an online exhibition to celebrate the Yorkshire Dialect, amongst other things. It’s combined two sound archives made 50 years apart, as a study into the way accents change.

History dictates that Charlize Theron was a cert for the Oscar… http://filmsite.org/bestactress.html

Yeah Daisy, I was just agreeing with you. The press coverage has been quite annoying.
And Halle Berry was just being really melodramatic in Monster’s Ball. Her performance made me cringe and I never forgot that it was Halle Berry playing this woman who was having a…uh…vehement lovemaking session with Billy Bob Thornton. Although I suppose you’ve gotta earn something after having a sex scene with Billy Bob.
:)~

Of the three, surely Monsters Inc can be forgiven - it was actually about Monsters after all :)

I actually watched monster’s ball on my laptop during a flight. Luckly no one was sitting next to me (or looking over my shoulder) during the “vehement” love making.
I was quite embarrassed at the time

I want some of whatever Billy Bob has had. Halle Berry, Angelina Jolie… Got to hand it to the lad.
