Glad that he's OK - doesn't sound like fun at all.

As for 5am - Well, welcome to my world... :¬)

Thanks guys. We've been talking more about it since and it seems that a car was stopped just behind the crash (they phoned the ambulance) but then drove off before the police arrived (possibly a dodgy minicab). The debris was just over the crest of a hill so M used a flashlight to warn oncoming (speeding) traffic of the danger. Once a copper...
Meanwhile a group of drunken passers-by stopped to gawk and generally make themselves a nuisance. While a man lay dying. M has been at hundreds of road accidents but this was one of the worst he's seen. That poor man's family.

As for our car, seems that the radiator, sump, carburettor and diesel tank are all damaged beyond repair but the insurance company currently won't authorise a hire car because "the other party hasn't admitted liability". Eh? Living miles from train stations, shops, etc. and a one-bus-a-day service means that we're a bit stranded until we go ahead and hire a car ourselves or get news from the insurance company. But at the risk of sounding Pollyanna-ish about it, we're safe and well, sod the car.

Oh heavens, that's dreadful. Hope M isn't in line for anything nasty like post-traumatic-stress? Poor guy, and poor you too :-(

There's nothing like a bad accident to make you see things differently, is there? And don't apologise for the Pollyanna-ness; it's the best way to be when bad stuff happens, I think.

Best regards, hope all is now well,
Croila

There's no such thing as an ex-cop! And one thing you can say about 'em... they sure know how to deal with an emergency. It sounds like your husband kept his head on, good-o... i'll bet it was a long bit of time till he came home, tho...
My sorrows for the dead man and his family... i'm sure he never set off from home that day knowing where he would end up... could happen to any of us, i suppose...
