If you go just ten minutes down the road towards Swindon, there is a lovely old Saxon town* called Cricklade. There you will find at least two pubs that do a good luncheon. Incidentally, the Red Lion pub that doesn't do good noon-fare serves fantastic beers and cider of an evening.

At Cricklade are the meadows. They are on the Thames path, home to the rare flotillery flower, are enclosed from the roads and criss-crossed with many public paths.

It's a very nice little place. Unfortunately it's also too close to Swindon for long-term comfort... so I left.

*That's what it says on the sign.

Thanks guys, will relay all information to ma & pa for our outing next week.

Amber, I'm not being picky about the park (ooh, doesn't that scan well?), it's just that 2 weeks after Dizzy came to live with us she suddenly went awol, ran the length of the park, on to the road and under the wheels of a car. 1 steel hip/pelvis replacement, a £3000 vet bill and many grey hairs later we're a bit careful about where we let her run. She has absolutely no road sense at all and if she spies a squirrel, a bird or a Bo Derek hair-alike she'll be off like the wind.
