Draw happy

A bit of a mish-mash of links all related to drawing, inspired by Monique’s post at Coolios.

For dog lovers, Cartoon Critters – how to draw a puppy (I failed). I did a little better with Uncle Fred.

Gary Harbo has some excellent tutorials and free graphics – wonder if any of the librarians who read this would like a free graphic?

How to draw a hedgehog for Noelle. Anyone want to try the armadillo? The Jan Brett site has some lovely ideas to keep kids of all ages busy.

Tutorials on creating Neopets and anime style drawings

How to draw a self potrait

Great resources for those interested in drawing the human form while Modellisa.com “interactive nude models for figure drawing and sculpture” is beautifully designed but may not be Work Safe.

A new (to me) sketch blog

ColorWhore “a directory of nice colors”

Sidenote: I just lost the previous version of this post because if you click on a hyperlink from a non browser source (email, Word document, etc.), Firefox 1.0 has stopped opening a new window but instead goes to the tab you last looked at in the Firefox window. Going back a page doesn’t help, the post is wiped clean. Does that make sense? Is there a setting I can change? Because frankly it’s driving me bloody potty. ***

p.s. 30 or so comments to go ’til The Big One.

*** Update: Thanks to Neil for pointing to the (now) obvious :
Tools > Options > Advanced, then select one of the three options from under ‘Tabbed Browsing’

Firefox works so well “straight out of the box” (or downloaded and installed in nanoseconds from the site) that I tend to forget that you can tweak away to your heart’s content. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Update 2: 101 things that the Mozilla browser can do that IE cannot [thanks to Meg and Stu]

Dammit, thanks Neil! I did go poking around there but must’ve missed it. Yes I know it’s staring me in the face and I should have seen it but sometimes a girl has other things on her mind. *sniff*.

Hmm, not wanting to promote IE at all, I do have to take issue with a few of those “101 Reasons”. It’s all part of my continuing role as devil’s advocate for Firefox. ;)

    1. You can get free shells for IE that add tabbed browsing — e.g. Slimbrowser, AvantBrowser — which in my view is not all that different from adding an extension. They also block pop-ups and add a host of other features such as mouse gestures and browser skinning.

    2. IE SV1 blocks pop-ups.

    5. Essentially false: you can open your Favourites, History etc [most notably, a Search panel which co-ordinates with the main window] in a side panel in IE.

    9. Opera does this too, but since neither browser remembers the setting from session to session [or, in fact, page to page], I’ve yet to see a useful site implementation of this feature. If anyone actually has seen one, please let me know.

    53. If I recall correctly, you need to specifically install the MathML fonts, they don’t come with Mozilla. Equivalently, there is a plugin for IE called MathPlayer which enables it to disable MathML-encoded pages.

    60. No browser should even make text blink. Ever. ;)

And as pointed out in the comments to the original post, 99 and 100 [and 101] make no sense: the browser does not “do” open source or Bugzilla.

‘wonder if any of the librarians who read this would like a free graphic?’

    No, that’s scary!

    I like Sketchblogs too.

Heh, but of course, 92 reasons why Mozilla is better than IE is still quite a persuasive amount. ;)
