Link dump #4
After a weekend spent slogging it out over a hot guest room (decluttering, dedusting, dehoovering) in preparation for Christmas guests, it’s quite a relief to get back in front of the computer. Here’s what’s been catching my eye recently.
A history of blogging and censorship in china [via manic]
Before & After magazine, all things design.
Vital for those who hate listening to loud conversations by other people on their cell phones/mobiles and who have the cojones to follow through: Shhh – the Society for Handheld Hushing [small PDF download] [via verbatim]. A selection of printable cards you may like to have handy the next time you’re on the train/bus/anywhere public and some oik is discussing intimate details with his girlfriend/mate/boss. Coudal Partners design stuff for The Pixies by the way.
One of my earliest memories is of my father telling the story of the 1938 US radio broadcast of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds. I still get goosebumps at remembering Jeff Wayne’s 1976 version with Richard Burton [go here and scroll down a little to hear a line of Burton from the recording]. But it looks like Spielberg and Cruise will be having another shot, even the url has been snapped up.
You remember that song from Grease, Rizzo sings There are worse things I could do? That’s the first thing that popped in my head when I saw this.

Amazing how you get around! Re: Better things to do, did you read that India has banned Coke and Pepsi until the manufacturers put a notice on the product that it contains an unhealthy level of pesticides? Wonder if that fellow knows.

You have such consistently good stuff you’ve left me no choice but to link from you from Humanyms. BTW, Love how you show visited links, and, you might like It’s Peru Baby http://itsperubaby.blogspot.com/

Spielberg does WotW? I assume we’ll all be rescued by an all-American hero then.
BTW you can listen to the original broadcast here (RealAudio format, 57’32″)

Love the new format and design; enough to allow you to realize that I haven’t been to your site except to read it through bloglines since you’ve updated. But the semester’s over, Christmas will soon be as well, and I can get back to “direct reading”.

Em, that’s brilliant link, thank you!
Hi Susan! (and thank you). Looking forward to seeing you “directly” so to speak ;-)

About hushing; i still think Spock had it right in Star Trek IV (?) when he Vulcan death-gripped a punk sharing his toons a bit too generously on the public transit system.
Now, how did that go… ? Thumb here, forefinger there… ?
