A lazy (wo)man’s tip for Firefox
If you prefer links to open in new tabs rather than a new window, you can go to Firefox settings (Tools => Options => Tabs):
It’s useful when you’re using a web based email (e.g. gmail) and are too lazy to use right click to open a new tab rather than the default new window. Great for pen/tablet users too.

If your mouse has a clickable scrollwheel/middle button, I think you can use that to open links in new [background] tabs, giving you even greater flexibility.

I’ve a Logitech 2 button mouse with a scrollable middle wheel but it doesn’t seem to want to let me open anything with it (yet). Will keep trying. Plus, I use the pen/tablet about 80% of the time so it’s nice to have the easy way out :-)
