Trackback spammers

Thursday, February 3rd, 2005

Annoying spammers are moving on from leaving inane/offensive comments to leaving, well inane/offensive trackbacks. Normally I just delete them and move on but having received a rash of offensive TrackBacks this past few days I thought I’d jot down a quick how-to for TypePad users because it’s not yet in the documentation as far as I can see.

  1. Log on as normal and go to the Posts section: Trackbackspammers3.
  2. Click on List TrackBacks and you’ll see the offending trackback(s).
  3. Trackbackspammersdisplay

  4. Select those you wish to delete, scroll down and hit Delete TrackBacks. A popup window will appear

    Trackbackspammersconfirm

asking you to confirm, hit YES, DELETE and…

  5. Baff! They’re gone.

You might also think about banning the offending IP [Control Panel -> Block someone from commenting] but I haven’t found that to be very effective yet, they use such a variety of IPs and I think you risk inadvertently banning a genuine visitor.

Typekey login

Tuesday, January 11th, 2005

Wondering about signing up for TypeKey? If you have a TypePad account then your user name and password are valid for TypeKey too.

Not that I had to email Six Apart for a new password or anything. Deep down, I knew that the login was the same, I was just having a “senior moment”. It’s just that at certain times of the month I really shouldn’t be let loose on the internet alone.

First person to confess that they didn’t know this either will get a donation to Make Poverty History on their behalf.

The one with all the thankyous

A huge thank you to Neil, Ellie, Emrys, Sheilagh*, Anan and to Laura at TypePad.

TypePad subscription due? Want to start a TypePad blog?

Thursday, December 9th, 2004

If anyone is using the Pro subscription and would be interested in splitting the cost via the current “buy one get one free” offer, could you email me as soon as possible? If you’d prefer to leave a comment, I’ll email you from there.

My subscription is due to be renewed today (yes I know, I’ve left it late but procrastination is my middle name) so if you could let me know rather quickly so that I can either start the process and renew for the next year with the free second subscription for you or *gulp* find the money for just the next month and find a painless way to switch from TypePad.

Sloooow

Apologies for the slowness in commenting today, TypePad seems to be grinding to a halt. Posting is a bit of a nightmare too but your intrepid bloggeuse will persevere.

Two qvick qvestions

Friday, June 25th, 2004

1. What’s the best way to display html and MT code so that the angle brackets, $ signs, etc. don’t disappear?

2. I think I know this but I’m brain dead (blame the toes) – I want to create quote boxes similar to the one below (stolen from Meg) for this central post column but with a variable width.

“Codswallop” she said, sneeringly.

And so I’m off to bed. Trailer trash style, with unironed sheets. But at least they smell lovely.

User counter script

Wednesday, April 28th, 2004

Thanks to a recommendation from Don, I’ve signed up with nerds onsite for a free user counter (it’s on the right for the minute, just under the search box). Very easy to set up and I like the fact that you can specifiy your own text, both for when there is 1 user online or more.

TypePad review

Friday, April 23rd, 2004

TypePad gets a mention in this month’s Internet Magazine (June 2004). The cover story is “Power Up: your definitive guide to all the software, services and content you’ll never regret paying for”.

TypePad is the only blogging software to get a mention (just the basic level):

Price: $4.95 (£2.70) a month for a basic package, giving you 1GB of data transfer and 50MB web space
If you’re keen on weblogs but don’t want to fiddle around with style sheets or customised templates, try a premium hosted weblog service like TypePad’s, brought to you by the people who gave us Movable Type. A friendly interface lets you design your site, add weblog entries or photographs and more. There’s a 30 day free trial at the moment.

CSS templates

New link added to the Learning list – Intensive Station [via bleu blanc blog]. Great css templates, techniques and links to other resources.

p.s. Like Kimberley, I think there’s a sniggering schoolboy in all of us that delights in stuff like The Secret Finger Trick.
